ETAL How to Guides

On the Ground Beaver Monitoring

On the ground beaver structure monitoring is useful for monitoring changes over time to complexes. The forms on this page also include options if there are manmade BDAs in the stream. None of the questions in the XLS forms are required for submission to Survey123, so record what is necessary and possible then submit.

Hints for measurements in these forms assume measurements are being taken in metric units however, if needed there is a dropdown to mark if measurements were taken in imperial units. The survey is set up that these measurements need to be taken as one value. This means values should be 174 inches, 1.74 m, or 174 cm rather than 14 ft 6 in or 1 m 74 cm.

The basic complex form covers whether the dams were beaver built, their status, and the type of complex, size of complex, and where the dams are.

The advanced complex form has all of the basic form and additional space to record measurements, side channels, extent, materials used, sediment build up, and check boxes for signs of recent beaver maintenance. An important note in this survey is that measurements of dams may be difficult to collect or not important data for the purposes of what you are doing. In these cases remember that these questions are optional and you can submit the form and leave those boxes blank.

There is an additional option for monitoring which is a form that focuses on dam level monitoring, this approach can be less useful because individual dams rise and fall but complexes usually persist. The form for individual dam monitoring has questions about whether dams were beaver built, the type of dam, the status of that dam, and location of the dam.

Something important to note is that whoever generates these forms should be the person who will be managing the data. When a Survey123 form is created all data collected through those forms stores to the ArcGIS Online account of the person who created the form.

These forms come as printable forms and as XLSForms which can easily be made in Survey123 forms for use with the ESRI Survey123 field app.

Accessing Survey123 through field app

Taking this survey into the field is made easier through apps that are available for both iOS and Android. The link to download the app is available on the same website you downloaded the Survey123 Connect program from. You can also go to your phone or tablet’s app store and then search for “Survey123” and download “ArcGIS Survey123” by ESRI.

When the app finishes downloading launch it and sign into your ArcGIS Online account.

Open the link you created earlier on the Survey123 website using your device. To get the link from desktop to mobile I like to email it to myself and access the link from my email app, you can use whatever method you prefer. This should open a browser window that prompts you to open the survey in browser or field app. You’ll want to tap to open the survey in the field app.

The form will download and then launch, you can close out of the survey by tapping the x in the corner.

To access and use the survey, launch the survey by tapping on it from the home page of the app and then tapping collect at the bottom. Fill out the survey and then hit the check mark in the bottom to submit.
